February Trend Report: Small Joys

February Trend Report: Small Joys

In a season that can feel heavy or rushed, this trend invites us to slow down, observe, and create from a place of presence. And honestly? That’s where some of the most meaningful making happens. In this Trend Report, I'm encouraging you to find ways to let those 'Small Joys' in your everyday life inspire your creative process too.

Letting Everyday Joys Shape Our Makes

One of my own recent small joys has been a simple one: a new bird feeder outside my sweing room window and the bluejay who visits throughout the day. That tiny pause, watching color and movement, listening to the sound of wings, became the inspiration for an upcoming bag I'll be sharing soon. The Fly Away Crossbody by Madision Moore.

It’s a reminder that inspiration doesn’t always come from mood boards or trend forecasts. Sometimes it comes from looking up from your work and noticing what’s already there.

I’ll be releasing a full Fly Away Crossbody tutorial on YouTube in March, but I wanted to share the story here first because it perfectly captures what this trend is about:
creating as a response to life, not as a performance.

Another small joy that’s turned into a big creative moment for me is the tomato appliqué outfit I’m working on for QuiltCon. It’s playful, nostalgic, and rooted in the comfort of gardening memories, food, warmth, and silliness. Not everything we make needs to be optimized or polished. Sometimes it just needs to make us smile.

Small Joys in Practice: February on YouTube

Creating From What Already Brings You Joy

If you want to lean further into the Small Joys trend this month, here are a few prompts to guide your next project, especially when choosing from our hand-dyed fabrics or browsing the our Ready to Ship fabrics:

  • Nature moments
Birdwatching, gardening, fresh air, changing light. Look for sky blues, mossy greens, soft neutrals, and organic textures.

  • Food & comfort rituals
Baking days, family recipes, seasonal produce. Tomato reds, herb greens, warm yellows, and playful prints shine here.

  • Daily routines
Your favorite chair, mug, notebook, or exercise ritual. These can inspire color palettes, quilting layouts, or slow stitching details.

  • Personal symbols
A pet, a plant, a memory, a song. Appliqué, embroidery, and fussy cutting are powerful ways to honor these quietly.

  • Anticipation of spring
Fabrics that feel hopeful, fresh, or nostalgic can become garments and accessories that carry you gently into the next season.

A Gentle Invitation

This trend isn’t asking you to add more to your plate. I'm inviting you to notice what’s already filling your cup.

💬 I’d love for you to share in the comments:

  • What’s a small joy you’ve been noticing lately?

  • Has something outside of sewing been inspiring what you’re making right now?
